Air New Zealand has officially ushered in a bold new chapter in air travel, unveiling its first fully retrofitted Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, complete with a groundbreaking cabin redesign that redefines the passenger experience from nose to tail.

Set to begin commercial service on Monday, May 19, the Dreamliner ZK-NZH will operate its first route from Auckland to Brisbane, followed by a long-haul debut to San Francisco that same evening. Tickets for the redesigned aircraft go on sale Wednesday, May 7, with travelers now able to book seats across all cabin classes—including the airline’s game-changing Business Premier Luxe.
Described as a “world-first” by the airline, the refitted aircraft marks the first complete retrofit of a 787-9 Dreamliner globally, a milestone timed with Air New Zealand’s 85th anniversary year. CEO Greg Foran hailed the launch as “an incredibly special moment,” underscoring years of planning, innovation, and customer-driven design.
“This is the first new onboard product we’ve introduced in over 15 years,” Foran said. “Every detail of this cabin—from the textures you touch to the spaces you relax in—reflects the very best of Aotearoa.”
The aircraft spent 184 days in Singapore undergoing the transformation, which includes entirely new seating across all four cabin classes, a redesigned inflight entertainment system, enhanced privacy features, and elegant, locally inspired design touches.
What’s New on Board
Business Premier Luxe introduces four exclusive front-row suites with full privacy doors, lie-flat beds, and enough space for two passengers to dine together. The cabin also features:
- 24-inch 4K screens with Bluetooth audio pairing
- Sliding privacy screens and wireless charging
- Reconfigurable middle seats for couples or solo flyers
Premium Economy now features fixed-shell seats to prevent recline intrusion, privacy-enhancing side wings, and expanded personal storage.
In Economy, passengers can expect:
- 50% larger entertainment screens
- New Economy Stretch seats offering additional legroom
- Smart stowage solutions, snack trays, and elastic holders for essentials
Across all cabins, passengers can control entertainment using their phones, enjoy Picture-in-Picture functionality, and build personalized watchlists—ushering in a new era of digital integration in the skies.
A Fleetwide Transformation
The ZK-NZH is the first of 14 Dreamliners in Air New Zealand’s fleet to receive the retrofit. A second aircraft is currently undergoing upgrades in Singapore, with seven scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, and the entire fleet revamped by 2026.
Routes featuring the new cabin experience will initially include Brisbane, San Francisco, Rarotonga, and Vancouver, with more destinations to be added as additional aircraft are completed.
