Air New Zealand will begin selling access to its long-awaited Economy Skynest sleep pods from May 18, 2026, marking the first time lie-flat rest will be available to Economy and Premium Economy passengers on scheduled commercial flights.
The product will enter service in November aboard the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, initially operating on flights between New York JFK Airport and Auckland Airport—one of the longest routes in the global airline network.
The Skynest system consists of six lie-flat pods arranged in a bunk-style layout located between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins. Passengers will be able to book four-hour sleep sessions, with two sessions available per flight in the initial rollout. Prices will start from $495 AUD per session.
Air New Zealand chief executive Nikhil Ravishankar said the product was designed specifically for the demands of ultra long-haul travel.
“On some of the world’s longest commercial flights to and from New Zealand, Skynest is designed to make a real difference to the journey,” he said in a statement.
Each pod includes a full-length mattress, bedding, lighting, ventilation, charging ports and a privacy curtain. Bedding will be changed between sessions, and passengers will receive an amenity kit including an eye mask, ear plugs and skincare products.
The airline said the concept had been in development for several years and tested with more than 200 customers. It was awarded a Crystal Cabin Award in 2023 for innovation in aircraft interiors.
The introduction of Skynest represents a significant shift in long-haul cabin design, effectively separating sleep from the passenger seat and creating a new ancillary product aimed at improving rest on flights exceeding 15 hours.
Unlike traditional premium cabins, access to the pods will not require a ticket upgrade, allowing Economy and Premium Economy passengers to purchase rest periods independently of their seat class.
The move builds on Air New Zealand’s earlier “Skycouch” concept and forms part of a broader cabin upgrade program across its Dreamliner fleet. Other changes include new Business Premier Luxe seats with closing doors, redesigned Premium Economy seating with fixed shells, and upgraded Economy cabins featuring larger in-flight entertainment screens.
Industry analysts say the success of the Skynest model will depend on passenger uptake and operational efficiency, particularly given the limited number of pods available per flight.
If successful, the concept could influence other airlines as they expand ultra long-haul services and seek new revenue streams while addressing passenger fatigue on extended routes.
The Auckland–New York service, which can exceed 17 hours depending on conditions, has become a key test case for such innovations as airlines compete to improve comfort on the world’s longest flights.
