Aeroméxico was founded in 1934 as Aeronaves de México and officially began operations with a flight from Mexico City to Acapulco. The airline expanded rapidly over the decades, modernizing its fleet and expanding its international route network. In 1988, Aeroméxico was privatized but later faced financial challenges that led to its temporary government takeover. The airline emerged stronger and became a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance in 2000.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Aeroméxico filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2020 but successfully restructured and emerged from bankruptcy in 2022, continuing to operate as Mexico’s flagship carrier.
