History

AirAsia was founded in 1993 and began operations in 1996 as a Malaysian government-linked airline. However, it struggled financially until 2001, when it was acquired by Tony Fernandes and his business partners for a symbolic sum of 1 Malaysian Ringgit. Under new management, AirAsia adopted the low-cost carrier (LCC) model, transforming itself into Asia’s leading budget airline.

It became the first airline in the region to offer no-frills, low-cost air travel, which revolutionized the industry. By focusing on affordable fares, operational efficiency, and an extensive route network, AirAsia quickly expanded its footprint across Asia. Today, it is one of the largest LCCs globally.
