LATAM Airlines was created in 2012 from the merger of LAN Airlines (Chile) and TAM Airlines (Brazil), forming the largest airline group in Latin America. The merger combined LAN’s extensive South American network with TAM’s strong presence in Brazil. Initially, the two airlines operated under their original names, but by 2016, the unified LATAM brand was launched.
The airline faced financial struggles due to economic downturns in the region and increased competition from low-cost carriers. In 2020, LATAM filed for bankruptcy protection due to the COVID-19 pandemic but has since restructured its operations. Despite challenges, it remains the dominant airline in Latin America, offering extensive domestic and international connectivity.
