Lion Air was founded in 1999 and began operations in June 2000 as a low-cost carrier (LCC) focused on domestic travel within Indonesia. It quickly expanded, becoming the largest privately owned airline in the country. By the mid-2000s, it introduced international routes and aggressively grew its fleet, primarily composed of Boeing 737 aircraft.
Lion Air faced challenges, including safety concerns and regulatory scrutiny, but worked to improve its operations. The airline was removed from the European Union’s aviation blacklist in 2016, marking an improvement in safety standards. Over the years, it has expanded its network to include regional and international destinations across Asia.
Lion Air is part of the Lion Air Group, which also includes Batik Air, Wings Air, Malindo Air (now Batik Air Malaysia), and Thai Lion Air. Despite being a low-cost carrier, it offers some premium services through its affiliated airlines.

Lion Air serves over 100 domestic destinations across Indonesia with a strong presence in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali, Medan, and Makassar.
Lion Air’s international destinations include Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar in Southeast Asia; India and Sri Lanka in South Asia; China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in East Asia; and Special flights to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.
