Southwest Airlines was founded by Herb Kelleher and Rollin King in 1967, initially operating within Texas to bypass federal regulations that applied to interstate carriers. The airline officially began operations in 1971 with three Boeing 737 aircraft, flying between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Known for its low-cost, no-frills approach, Southwest pioneered several key airline industry innovations, including a simplified fare structure and open seating. Over the decades, the airline expanded nationwide and remains one of the most profitable and efficient carriers in the world.

Southwest primarily serves the United States, with flights to over 120 destinations across 42 states.
