The journey of American Airlines began in 1926 with a single mail flight from Chicago to St. Louis. A century later, that modest operation has grown into one of the world’s largest and most recognisable airline brands — a milestone the carrier is beginning to celebrate this week ahead of its official centennial year in 2026.

American said customers will start seeing the first signs of its 100-year celebrations immediately, with commemorative branding, aircraft liveries and onboard touches rolling out across its network.
“American is proud to be among the small group of airlines that have celebrated 100 years of flight,” Chief Executive Officer Robert Isom said. “There’s no brand in aviation more iconic than American, built on a culture of innovation and forward-thinking. We’re poised to continue that legacy into the next 100 years for our customers and team members.”
Later this month, a Boeing 737 (below) — a mainstay of the airline’s domestic and short-haul international operations — will debut a special centennial livery. The design pays tribute to American’s past while looking ahead, featuring silver infinity rings near the rear of the aircraft. Known internally as the airline’s centennial pattern, the motif is intended to symbolise continuity, progress and future possibilities.

The airline’s new centennial logo will also begin appearing throughout the customer journey, including online booking channels, airports and inflight. The design blends American’s existing brand identity with an infinity symbol, representing what the airline describes as its enduring connection with customers.
American plans to apply a commemorative decal featuring the centennial logo to more than 1,500 aircraft across its fleet, ensuring the anniversary is marked on virtually every flight. The branding will also be visible on aa.com, social media platforms, inflight entertainment screens and a range of limited-edition merchandise, including scale models of the centennial aircraft.
Celebrations will continue throughout 2026, with customers promised a series of special touches onboard. These will include commemorative amenity kits, pajamas, inflight dining offerings and other limited-time items designed specifically for the anniversary year.
To accompany the celebrations, American has launched a dedicated centennial website showcasing its history and evolution. The site features archival material, stories from employees and access to anniversary merchandise.
American traces its origins to a Robertson Aircraft Corporation DH-4 mail flight in 1926 — an operation that laid the foundations for the modern airline. Over the following decades, the carrier would go on to introduce milestones such as the AAdvantage® frequent flyer program and the world’s first airport lounge, while continuing to invest in new premium products like its Flagship Suite® seats.
The airline said its centennial year will highlight a century defined by innovation, resilience and customer loyalty, as American looks to honour its past while positioning itself for the next era of global air travel.
