American Airlines Says Ciao to Mediocre Coffee, Buongiorno to Lavazza

American Airlines is giving its coffee game a major glow-up — and it’s got a distinctly Italian accent. The carrier has teamed up with Lavazza, the 130-year-old coffee icon from Turin, to make sure that your morning cup in the lounge tastes just as good as the one you sip 35,000 feet above Kansas.

For the first time, American flyers will be able to enjoy the same blend of smooth, velvety espresso-inspired magic both in the air and on the ground — a bold move in a world where airline coffee has often been the punchline to many travel jokes. “We’re focused on every aspect of the customer experience, and a quality cup of coffee is an important part of that journey,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer. “We’re proud to team up with this iconic brand to bring a rich, satisfying coffee experience to our customers — whether they’re in the air or relaxing in our lounges.”

Lavazza, which has been perfecting the art of coffee since 1895, clearly knows its beans. The family-owned brand has long been a staple of Italian cafes and high-end restaurants worldwide, known for its carefully crafted blends that somehow manage to taste like sophistication itself. The company says the new partnership will bring “moments of pleasure and connection” to travelers — which sounds like just the thing you want after a red-eye with a crying baby in 17B.

“Partnering with American Airlines allows us to bring the true Lavazza experience to travelers around the world,” said Hossam Ashraf, Americas President at Lavazza Group. In other words: the espresso revolution is boarding now.

Starting in early 2026, the new Lavazza brews will roll out across all American Airlines cabins and lounges, including Flagship® and Admirals Club® locations. So whether you’re jetting off to New York or Naples, you’ll be able to fuel up on something a little more bellissimo than the usual inflight sludge.

For an airline that’s been steadily polishing its premium touch — from better food to sleeker lounges — the Lavazza deal feels like the caffeine-infused cherry on top. One thing’s for sure: passengers might just start looking forward to airplane coffee. And that, for American Airlines, could be the biggest win of all.
