American Airlines will introduce the Airbus A321XLR into service on December 18, operating its first flight between New York–JFK and Los Angeles. Tickets for the inaugural service are now available.
The airline, the first U.S. carrier to fly the A321XLR, received its initial aircraft from Airbus’ Hamburg assembly line on October 22. The narrowbody jet features a three-class layout with 20 Flagship Suite seats (below), 12 Premium Economy seats and 123 in the Main Cabin.
The Flagship Suite, previously unveiled on American’s forthcoming Boeing 787-9s, includes lie-flat seats with privacy doors, personal storage, wireless charging, and individual lighting. Premium Economy seats feature enhanced privacy headrests, footrests and upgraded dining options.
Initially deployed on domestic transcontinental routes, the A321XLR will later be used for international flights starting in the first half of 2026.
American says the new aircraft reflects its strategy to modernize its fleet and offer a more consistent premium experience across long-haul and coast-to-coast routes.

Customers who choose the airline’s new Premium Economy seats on the XLR will enjoy an enhanced winged headrest for increased privacy, calf and footrests for relaxing comfort, wireless charging and enhanced dining with hot meal entrees. On board, customers will find a personal amenity kit with premium skincare products and can comfortably rest with an Ostrichpillow® lumbar pillow and crepe weave blanket.
