Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. has placed a firm order for 20 A350F freighter aircraft with Airbus, marking the largest single order to date for the new-generation cargo jet and positioning Atlas as the type’s biggest customer.
The US-based airfreight operator said the aircraft will be used to support fleet expansion, as global demand for cargo capacity continues to grow. The deal also secures early delivery slots for the A350F, Airbus’ next-generation widebody freighter.
Atlas Air Chief Executive Michael Steen said the order reflects the company’s strategy to modernise its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft.
“This order reflects our commitment to maintaining the industry’s most modern and fuel-efficient widebody freighter fleet to best service existing and new customers worldwide,” Steen said, adding that the A350F would deliver improved payload, range and environmental performance.
Airbus said the agreement represents a significant milestone for the A350F programme, particularly in the United States cargo market.
“We are excited to welcome Atlas Air Worldwide to the Airbus family,” said Lars Wagner. He described the order as a “pivotal moment” that reinforces the A350F’s position among next-generation freighters.
The A350F is designed with a focus on efficiency and compliance with future environmental standards. Airbus said more than 70% of the aircraft structure is made from advanced materials, contributing to a substantially lower take-off weight compared with older freighter designs.
The aircraft will also be the only freighter fully compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s stricter carbon emissions standards set to take effect in 2027, according to Airbus.
The A350F features a large main deck cargo door and is optimised for standard industry pallets and containers, targeting improved operational efficiency for cargo operators.
