Emirates Sets New Global Benchmark in Baggage Handling Amid Record-Breaking Travel Surge

Emirates has confirmed its most successful year to date for baggage operations, setting new industry standards amid an unprecedented global travel boom. Between April 2024 and March 2025, the airline handled over 2.8 million bags each month—an average of 100,000 bags per day—across 140 international destinations. This marks a 3.7% year-on-year increase, making it Emirates’ busiest year for baggage handling in its history.

Despite the scale and complexity of its operations, Emirates has maintained a world-leading baggage success rate of 99.9%, cementing its status as the top-performing airline globally for baggage reliability. From its Dubai hub, baggage mishandling rates stand at just 1.4 per 1,000 bags—a figure that is up to 30 times lower than those reported by some international carriers.

“Every bag tells a story, and for Emirates, each one matters,” said a senior Emirates spokesperson. “Our relentless investment in technology, training, and teamwork ensures our customers and their luggage reach their destinations together—with precision.”

When baggage delays do occur, Emirates is swift to act. Globally, 91% of delayed bags are returned to their owners within 72 hours, despite the airline’s heavy reliance on international and transfer baggage, where complexity is significantly higher than on domestic routes.

Technology Meets Tenacity: Innovations in Baggage Tracking

In 2024, Emirates launched Bag Connect, an in-app and web-based tracking tool offering customers real-time updates on their baggage journey. The platform now operates across 80 stations worldwide, even offering detailed tracking of mishandled baggage deliveries.

From its Dubai International Airport (DXB) Terminal 3 hub, Emirates recovers around 80% of untagged bags—an average of 2,300 per month—before flight departure, thanks to tight integration with dnata and Dubai Airports systems. Lost tags, unexpected flight delays, and mechanical interruptions are swiftly mitigated through a coordinated response involving automated systems and on-ground recovery teams.

Exceptional Service Beyond Bags: Lost & Found Efficiency

The airline’s excellence extends beyond suitcases. Emirates’ Lost and Found team at DXB boasts a 94% recovery rate of valuable items, including passports, wallets, and phones, with most items returned to their owners within just 60 minutes. The team’s rapid response has made it an industry standout in customer service.

A Global Baggage Ecosystem, Engineered for Excellence

Behind Emirates’ operational success lies a multimillion-dollar investment in custom software and intelligent baggage management systems. From high-tech scanning in the “Boss Room” to seamless coordination between porters, ground agents, and baggage handlers, every piece of luggage follows a precisely engineered path.

Emirates’ teams—across Dubai and globally—undergo continuous training, both virtual and hands-on, ensuring they stay at the forefront of best practices in baggage handling. Close collaboration with dnata and Dubai Airports ensures that each bag moves through the system with clockwork accuracy.

As the world’s largest international airline, Emirates continues to raise the bar for travel experience, promising passengers not just a smooth flight, but a seamless journey for their luggage too.
