The crash of Air India Flight 171 on 12th June 2025 was a wakeup call for Air India maintenance.
Immediately after the crash, India’s civil aviation ministry ordered “additional maintenance actions” and safety inspections on Air India’s 787 and 737 fleet.
By 22nd July 2025, Air India reported that it had completed the DGCA-mandated inspections of the fuel control switch locking mechanism on its Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft, and claimed that “no issues were found” with those mechanisms.
DGCA also carried out a “special surveillance” of aircraft defects at major airports (e.g. Delhi and Mumbai) and found recurring defects and lapses in maintenance and inspection practices, which suggests systemic oversight concerns beyond just the 787 fleet.
In July 2025, a DGCA audit of Air India (more broadly, not restricted to 787s) uncovered 51 safety lapses, including use of unapproved simulators, training gaps, and rostering/crew rest irregularities.
