Vietjet, has revealed plans to launch flights to the United States and explore a potential listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
The airline’s ambitions were highlighted during Vietjet Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao’s recent visit to the NYSE, where she was welcomed by exchange president Lynn Martin.
Speaking at the iconic trading floor, Dr. Thao said Vietjet was pursuing a dual strategy of expanding its global route network and tapping into international capital markets. She also suggested that HDBank, where she serves as standing vice chairwoman, could pursue a similar path.
“We will soon fly to the U.S., and we are also very excited to explore opportunities to raise capital in New York – the world’s largest stock exchange,” Dr. Thao said. “This is not only the aspiration of Vietjet and HDBank but also the dream of many Vietnamese enterprises seeking global integration.”
The visit came on the heels of a major milestone in Seattle, where Dr. Thao marked the delivery of Vietjet’s first Boeing 737-8. The aircraft is part of a landmark 200-plane order worth US$32 billion, the largest aviation contract between Vietnam and the United States.
NYSE, which lists around 2,400 companies with a combined market capitalization of nearly US$29 trillion, reaffirmed its support for Vietnamese firms seeking a presence in the U.S. market.
Vietjet and HDBank are both constituents of Vietnam’s VN30 Index, representing the country’s leading publicly traded companies. A potential NYSE listing, Dr. Thao noted, would mark a significant step in the companies’ international growth and raise Vietnam’s profile on the global financial stage.
To cap off the day, Dr. Thao joined the NYSE’s ceremonial closing bell, symbolizing what she described as the beginning of a new chapter for Vietnamese aviation and finance.
