WestJet is set to expand its fleet and global reach after placing a significant new order with Boeing, the companies announced today.
The Calgary-based carrier has purchased 67 additional aircraft, bringing its firm order book to 123 Boeing jets — the largest of any airline in Canada. The order, previously listed as unidentified on Boeing’s June Orders & Deliveries update, includes 60 Boeing 737-10 jets and seven 787-9 Dreamliners. WestJet also secured options for 25 more 737-10s and four additional 787-9s.
“With the addition of these aircraft, WestJet has the largest order book of any airline in Canada, and will double our fleet of Dreamliners, underpinning our growth plans and our commitment to affordable travel options for Canadians,” said Alexis von Hoensbroech, WestJet’s chief executive officer. “These highly efficient and comfortable aircraft are critical to the growth and renewal of our fleet and will also significantly improve our fuel consumption.”
Founded in 1996 with just three Boeing 737s, WestJet now operates nearly 150 of the single-aisle jets across its domestic and international network. The airline also flies both the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner on long-haul routes, with its existing seven 787-9s serving destinations in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said the order reflects the strength of the long-standing partnership between the two companies. “We are honored that WestJet has once again placed its trust in Boeing with a major investment that builds on our three decades of partnership and solidifies their fleet for the decades ahead,” Pope said.
WestJet’s fleet is among the youngest of North American carriers, with an average age of about 10 years. With this deal, the airline’s 737-10 commitments rise to 107 aircraft. Boeing says the model offers the lowest cost per seat of any single-aisle jet, while the 787 Dreamliner emphasizes fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.
