Airline Safety Rankings

World’s First Comprehensive Airline Environmental Rankings Launched

42kft.com (42 Thousand Feet), the global airline rankings platform, is proud to announce the launch of the world’s first dedicated airline environmental rankings system, offering passengers and industry stakeholders a comprehensive, data-driven assessment of airline sustainability performance.

This pioneering system evaluates airlines not on general or aspirational statements, but on verifiable, long-term commitments to reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Unlike other frameworks, statements such as “net zero by 2050” are treated as a baseline expectation—not a differentiator. The rankings emphasize firm actions such as fleet renewal, adoption of cleaner technologies, and measurable environmental initiatives.

Airline Environmental Rankings Criteria

Our methodology considers nine core criteria:

  • Fleet age
  • Fleet renewal plans
  • Commitment to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)
  • Recycling initiatives
  • Technological innovation
  • Verified carbon offset programs for passengers
  • Annual environmental reporting
  • Compliance with IATA’s Environmental Assessment (IEnvA)
  • Investment in electric and hybrid aircraft

Currently, 42kft.com ranks 142 airlines, representing approximately 80% of global air passenger traffic. Additional airlines will be incorporated into the system on a monthly basis to ensure continued relevance and global coverage.

Introducing Our Airline Inflight Product Rankings

In addition to environmental performance, 42kft.com has also released its new airline inflight product rankings, designed to provide a holistic, long-term view of the passenger experience.

Unlike traditional passenger review websites, which often reflect short-term changes, our rankings account for the evolving nature of airline services—including upgrades or downgrades in product offerings made in response to market trends and fare structures.

We recognize that airlines typically fall into two broad categories:

  • Full-service carriers, generally operating long-haul routes with a broad range of included services
  • Low-cost carriers, primarily operating short-haul routes with à-la-carte pricing models

However, we also acknowledge the emergence of hybrid models and service variations, and our methodology adjusts accordingly when classifying and ranking each airline.

Inflight Product Ranking Criteria

Our inflight product assessments are based on the following parameters:

  • Business class product quality
  • Premium economy offering
  • Economy class seat pitch exceeding 31 inches
  • Inflight entertainment systems
  • Availability or commitment to onboard Wi-Fi
  • Fleet renewal strategy
  • Aggregated passenger satisfaction scores from multiple rating agencies
  • Presence of industry-leading or “X-factor” innovations

Through these comprehensive ranking systems, 42kft.com aims to provide transparent, reliable, and future-focused insights into both the environmental impact and passenger experience offered by the world’s airlines.
